Buena Park  - February 10, 2012

The Buena Park and Santa Ana police departments are conducting DUI and driver's license checkpoints beginning Friday night.

Between 7 p.m. Friday and 2 a.m. Saturday, the Buena Park Police Department will hold a checkpoint on Beach Boulevard and Stanton Avenue.

Santa Ana police will conduct a DUI and driver's license checkpoint between 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 a.m. Sunday at 400 N. Fairview St.

The checkpoint will be staffed by officers trained in the detection of alcohol and drug impairment, according to the Santa Ana Police Department news release.

In California, the number of DUI deaths dropped to a record low of 791 in 2010, compared with 950 in 2009, said the California Office of Traffic Safety.

According to the Office of Traffic Safety, figures from the NHTSA show that statewide DUI deaths increased yearly from 1998 to 2005, but have decreased every year since 2005.

In Orange County, DUI deaths have consistently dropped between 2006 and 2010, NHTSA figures show. In 2010, there were 36 reported DUI deaths in Orange County, compared with 44 in 2009.

Funding for these checkpoints is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Santa Ana - February 11, 2012

The Santa Ana Police Department will be conducting a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on Saturday, February 11th, 2012. It will begin at 7:30PM and is scheduled to conclude at 1:30AM. It will be conducted in the area of 400 N. Fairview Street, in the City of Santa Ana.

The primary purpose of a DUI Checkpoint is to deter impaired driving, not to increase arrests. All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers. This DUI/Drivers License checkpoint is an effort to reduce those tragedies, as well as ensuring drivers have a valid driver's license. The DMV reports that unlicensed drivers are 4.9 times more likely to cause a fatal crash than a licensed driver.

The checkpoint will be staffed by officers trained in the detection of alcohol and drug impairment to provide on-the-spot assessments of drivers suspected of alcohol or drug impairment. All checkpoints are conducted in accordance with the guidelines for DUI checkpoint operations outlined in the California Supreme Court decision, Ingersoll v. Palmer.

All vehicles may be checked and drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will be arrested. Our objective is to send a clear message to those who are considering driving a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol and/or drugs - Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest. The public is encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver. Funding for this operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Office of Traffic Safety credits a record number of DUI checkpoints conducted in 2010 as partly responsible for the sharp reduction in DUI deaths.   According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, Nationwide deaths in crashes involving drunken drivers dropped 4.9 percent in 2010, taking 10,228 lives compared with 10,759 in 2009. But they dropped 14 percent in California.

"This marks a huge milestone in the fight against drunk driving," said California Office of Traffic Safety Director Christopher Murphy. "While we are elated by these figures, there were still 791 lives, futures and dreams that will never be fully realized. We cannot back off from our ultimate goal -- toward zero deaths."

The Irvine Police Department  publicizes these highly visible sobriety checkpoints to deter impaired drivers and to encourage the use of sober designated drivers.  The checkpoint will be clearly marked and vehicles will be selected to be checked on a pre-set basis to ensure objectivity.  Motorists will be greeted and given an informational brochure on impaired driving.  Driver's licenses will be checked, and trained officers will direct impaired drivers to a secondary check area for further evaluation.  Most motorists will experience little delay, if any at all.

Costa Mesa - September 23, 2011

The Costa Mesa Police Department is dedicated to keeping our streets safe through both enforcement and  education.  An effective tool that combines both enforcement and education are DUI/Driver's License  Checkpoints.  The Traffic Safety Bureau has two more checkpoints scheduled for this month as well as  several DUI Saturation patrols.  "If you drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol we'll be looking for  you," said Sergeant David Makiyama. "It's amazing how many people will still drive under the influence;  they either don't care or are unaware, either way it's scary.  Drive sober or get pulled over."

Drunk driving is one of America's deadliest crimes. In 2009, over 10,839 people died in highway crashes  involving a driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher.   California data for 2009 shows that 950 died in Alcohol Impaired Collisions, a 7.6 percent reduction in  deaths from 2008.

"Everyone in California should be heartened with these figures," said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of  the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS).  "But as encouraging as this is, we can't let up on the efforts  to promote and enforce traffic safety.  Far too many are still losing their lives or being severely injured on  our roadways." "These figures represent more people making it home safely and alive each day," said Murphy.  "But to  keep this trend going, we will continue to strive to meet our vision - Toward zero deaths, every 1 counts."

The next two checkpoints are scheduled for September 12, 2011, from 6:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. and  September 24, 2011, from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. within Costa Mesa.

Newport beach - September 14, 2011

The Traffic Division of the Newport Beach Police Department will be conducting a sobriety/driver's license checkpoint on Wednesday September 14, 2011.  The location of the checkpoint will be northbound Newport Blvd. at Finley Ave. The approximate hours of operation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m.

The checkpoint location was selected based upon its proximity to bars and restaurants and provides a high degree of visibility to the motoring public.  Site determination was also based upon roadway configuration, sight distances, traffic volume, lighting, and motorist safety.  A primary consideration was also officer safety.

The checkpoint will be clearly marked and vehicles will be selected to move through the check lanes on a pre-set basis to ensure objectivity and timeliness.  Motorists will be greeted and given an informational brochure on "Driving Under The Influence," prepared by the Newport Beach Police Department Traffic Division.

Checkpoints tend to reduce the number of drinking drivers on the road and do not necessarily produce dramatic increases in arrests.  The major value of checkpoints is their educational and deterrent influence on the motoring public.  This sobriety checkpoint has been established to ensure the public's safety and to reduce the number of alcohol-impaired drivers on the roadways in our Community, as well as insuring drivers have a valid driver's license.

Laguna Beach - September 2-September 5, 2011

This upcoming Labor Day Weekend, September 2nd thru September 5 th 2011, the Laguna Beach Police Department will be increasing its patrol staff in an effort to reduce the number of persons killed or injured in alcohol related crashes.

The Laguna Beach Police Department will saturate the city with additional officers in order to identify and remove DUI offenders from the roadways during certain holidays.  DUI saturation patrols have proven to be an effective method for achieving this goal. By publicizing these enforcement efforts, the Laguna Beach Police Department believes motorists will be deterred from drinking and driving.

The Laguna Beach Police Department recommends these simple tips to keep you and your family member's safe while on the roadway:

1) Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin;

2) Before drinking, designate a sober driver;

3) If you're impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation;

4) If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, don't hesitate to call 9-1-1;

5) And remember, Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Drunk.  If you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.

Funding for this operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (AVOID 26), through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Waiting drivers will be supplied with educational pamphlets explaining the dangers of drunken driving and detailing penalties.

The checkpoints are publicized by the Police Department to deter the public from driving drunk. When law-enforcement efforts are highly visible, laws are less likely to be violated.

Funding for such periodic special enforcement efforts are provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Cypress - August 19, 2011

Cypress, CA - Cypress Police Department today announced it will join nearly 10,000 other law enforcement agencies nationwide in support of an intensive crackdown on impaired driving August 19 - September 5, known as "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over."

A DUI/Driver's License Checkpoint is scheduled for August 19, 2011 at an undisclosed location within the city limits beginning at 6:00 PM in partnership with law enforcement nationwide during the Summer/Labor Day Campaign.  The crime of impaired driving is a serious one. In 2009 alone, 10,839 people died in crashes in which a driver or motorcycle rider was at or above the legal limit, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The age group with the highest percentage of alcohol-impaireddriving fatalities in motor vehicle traffic crashes was the 21-to-24 age group.

"All too often, innocent, law-abiding people suffer tragic consequences and the loss of loved ones due to this careless disregard for human life. Because we're committed to ending the carnage, we're intensifying enforcement during the crackdown. Since twice as many alcohol-impaired accidents occur over the weekend and four times as many occur at night, we will be especially vigilant during these high-risk times when impaired drivers are most likely to be on our roads," said Police Chief Jackie Gomez-Whiteley, Cypress Police Department.

Orange County Avoid the 26 Task Force will also deploy DUI Driver's License Checkpoints, Multi Agency DUI Task Force operations and local Roving DUI patrols during 18 day Summer/Labor Day Campaign.

Orange - July 22, 2011

The Orange Police Department traffic unit will conduct a sobriety and driver's license checkpoint from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. tonight at 1600 North Tustin St.

Officers will screen drivers passing through the checkpoint for sobriety and a valid driver's license. Once diverted into a lane, there will be a short delay while the officer explains what's happening.

Drivers found to be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs will be arrested, and unlicensed drivers may be cited and their vehicle impounded. The purpose of the checkpoint is to reduce the number of traffic collisions related to intoxicated drivers and hit and run collisions.
